The internet has begun as a communication network to satisfy the collaboration requirement of the government, the universities and corporate researches. Till now the internet has been optimized for efficient data communication between computers This immense success of data transmission over the packet switched network has led to the idea of transmitting voice over the internet . The term internet telephony has evolved to infer a range of different services. In general it refers to the transport of real -time media such as voice and video over the internet to provide interactive communication among the internet users. He parties involved may access the internet via PC a stand -alone internet protocol (IP) enabled device or even by dialing up to a gateway from the handset of a traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN).It introduces entirely new and enhanced way of communication.IP telephony involves the use of the internet to transmit real -time voice from one PC to another PC or a telephone. The technology involves digitisation of speech and splitting it into data packets that are transmitted over the internet . The compressed data is then re-assembled at the receiving end .This differs from the conventional public switched telephone network (PSTN), since the communication and transmission are performed across IP networks as against conventional switched networks.
